Artist of the Month

Artist of the Month - August 2007 Alan Hollar Wood Artist from Newland, NC

Alan Hollar lives and works in the mountains of North Carolina, a land that provides a never-ending source of material and inspiration for his work. Using primarily salvaged timbers from a number of sources, such as road building, construction, and storm damage, he is engaged in a constant exploration of the visual possibilities of form, color and texture. By combining lathe turning and carving, the potential of the vessel form is expanded, and the beauty and drama of the wood is lifted up to the eye.

The exhibit will open on August 3rd and run till August 31st. The exhibit is on display in the Piedmont Craftsmen Gallery at 601 N. Trade Street, W-S, NC

Raves and Reviews

Here are the wonderful things Piedmont Craftsmen's artists have been up to:

This spring:

Todd Smith spent time this winter at Cambridge University attending the International Conference on Technology, Knowledge and Society.

Rob Levin was one of 25 artists to participate in Make It New, a show demonstrating the vitality and diversity of contemporary art at the Asheville Art Museum in March.

Pat Pilchard had two prints accepted into the national competition, Dimensions 2007 at Associated Artists in Winston-Salem. This show ran from March 2 to June 2.

In April, Jan Richardson presented a workshop and was the subject of a one woman show at the Tim Salen Gallery of the St. Petersburg Clay Co. in Florida.

The Louise Brown Gallery at Duke University hosted the distinctly political work, By George!, #2, by Cynthia Aldrich in April.

The ceramic architectural reconstructions of Lin Barnhardt were featured in the show ARTchitecture at the Chasen Galleries in Charlotte, NC in May.

In June, Whitney Peckman hosted an open house for her live/work space in Salisbury. The space won this year's NC Award for Best Adaptive Use of a Building. What very busy and creative people!

Loretta Kaufman, a clay artist with Piedmont Craftsmen, exhibited her oil painting in the Gallery of the Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission this summer. A second show at the Nashville Jazz Workshop will run through August 30.

Current Exhibitions:
Dottie Moore is currently participating in the Nature of Quilts exhibit at the South Carolina Botanical Garden. This show runs through September of 2007.

From June through September Pat Pilchard will have work in From These Hills 2007, Contemporary Art in the Appalachian Highlands at the William King Regional Arts Center in Abingdon, VA.

July 27 to August 26 will find Lin Barnhardt's work at the Edward Hopper House Art Center in Nyack, NY.

This month, River Gallery of Chattanooga, presents Beneath the Surface featuring the work of Becky Gray.

Don't miss Peggy DeBell's Best Kept Secrets at the Asheville Area Arts Council now through August 29. Peggy creates wall hangings, framed art, wearables and more by printing on fabric with an inkjet printer and then quilting and embellishing the image. This is imaginative and unique work.

Up and Coming:
Don't miss the photography of Alison Overton in Angels of Good Fortune at Artspace Now, Raleigh, NC from August 3 through 31.

Four Piedmont Craftsmen, Judi Gaston, Joanna Gollberg, Nancy Kubale-Wicker and Nance Fleming, join forces for the interpretive show Saints & Sinners at Ariel Gallery in Asheville August 3 through September 3. There will be an opening reception on Friday, August 3.
